Porto, the city of Portugal
Porto is the second largest city of Portugal and urban area with a population of more than 1mln people. The city is located in the northern part of the country upon the Douro River. The roots of Porto can be found in the 4th century A.D. when it was under the Roman rule. During the ancient times the city of Porto was an important trade port of the Mediterranean Sea. In the 8th century city was conquered by the Moors. In the 9th century it was fought back by the vassal of the Asturian duke Alfonso III. In the 14th century in Porto was established the oldest alliance between Portugal and England, which exists today in thanks to the NATO. With the developing of the sea fleet Porto became an important international port of one of the leading naval countries of that time. Port was highly dependent from England and in the 19th century not so long after the Napoleonic Wars it revolted. Since then liberal constitution was established in Portugal.
In the end of the 20th century Porto was recognized by the UNESCO as the World Heritage Site. The oldest sights of the city are Oporto Cathedral, city walls and 15th century houses. There are also many baroque monuments such as churches of St. Francis and St. Claire, the churches of Mercy and of the Clerics and the Episcopal Palace of Porto. Here you can also taste local cuisine and visit such festivals as São João Festival in June and Queima das Fitas.
